These are just three of several inspiring accounts that can be found in Mike Winder’s most recent work titled “Favorite Scriptures of 100 American Leaders.” This book provides insight into the values of leaders who have shaped the nation and can help readers find a renewed hope in American politics.

In no particular order, Winder highlights selections from religious texts that have been quoted by political leaders ranging from George Washington to Donald Trump. Presidents, senators and representatives from all sides of the political spectrum are featured, including several women and minorities.

More than a dozen faith traditions are represented in Winder’s collection, which is comprised of verses from the Bible, the Quran, Hindu scriptures, Buddhist writings, and other sacred texts. Background information and historical accounts are provided to add context.

Latter-day Saint leaders quoted include Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah; Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz.; Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah; Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah; Utah Gov. Gary Herbert; former Utah GOP Rep. Mia Love; and former Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev. There are six references to the Book of Mormon and one to the Doctrine and Covenants.

Winder largely draws upon congressional records, presidential inauguration speeches, and news articles for his content. This collection is easy to read and comprehend, even for those who may not have a strong background in politics or history. Chapters are one or two pages long and can be enjoyed individually or collectively.

Some mild references to war, racism and death are found. The language mostly is clean. There are three instances when direct quotes contain a curse word, though only the first letter or the initials are used. There are no sexual innuendos.

Winder is currently a member of the Utah State House of Representatives and has served as the mayor of West Valley City. He is the author of 13 books.
