One of the most memorable wins in BYU football history was the Cougars’ 28-21 win over No. 1 Miami at Cougar Stadium in 1990.
Quarterback Ty Detmer was 38 of 54 for 406 yards and three touchdowns and the Cougars knocked off the Hurricanes.
“My junior year, we were playing No. 1-ranked Miami and we ended up beating them. Craig Erickson was a Heisman hopeful at the time, as I was,” Detmer recalled in a new video from ESPN.
The win sent the BYU faithful into a frenzy on the field.
“After the game, the crowd rushed the field. It was in Provo and it was the first time I had ever been in anything like that. My first thought was, ‘Man, I’m going to get caught out here and be the last one to the locker room and Coach (LaVell) Edwards is already going to be talking. I better hurry and get in,” Detmer said.
Detmer hurried to the locker room, only to find out he was the first one in there.
“I fought my way to the railing on the bleachers and shimmied down the railing. I shimmied down the railing. I run up into the locker room and I was the only one in there. I had to wait about five minutes for the first players to start filtering in,” Detmer said. “I look back at it now, Coach Edwards probably wouldn’t have been real mad at me had I been the last one in.”
