In a twist fitting for 2020, a TikTok trend based on Disney’s “Ratatouille” will now become a Broadway benefit concert with an all-star cast, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” will star Titus Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) in the main role of Remy, as well as Ashley Park (“Emily in Paris”) as Colette and Adam Lambert as Emile, EW reported.
The musical will be a one-time streaming performance, featuring crowdsourced musical numbers and content created by TikTok users, according to Deadline.
“Ratatouille” became a TikTok phenomenon earlier this year, when users began working together to create a musical based on the animated Disney movie — uploading videos performing original songs and dances, as well as showing off costumes, set designs, and playbill images for the musical, according to CNN.
“It started as a joke,” Blake Rouse, who wrote two “Ratatouille” songs for TikTok and is being given writing credit on the musical, told Rolling Stone. “And then people sort of started saying, ‘Hey, check this out. This could be the song, this could be the dance numbers, these could be costumes.’ People started to become invested in this TikTok musical theater baby everyone’s collectively taking care of.”
Since August, over 200 million TikTok users have watched the musical videos, CNN reported.
The upcoming benefit concert will be produced by the Tony Award-winning company Seaview, and proceeds will go to benefit the Actors Fund to help support out-of-work theater workers, according to EW.
Disney is not involved in the production of the musical but did voice their support for the project.
“Although we do not have development plans for the title, we love when our fans engage with Disney stories,” Disney said in a statement, according to the New York Times. “We applaud and thank all of the online theater-makers for helping to benefit the Actors Fund in this unprecedented time of need.”
“Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” begins streaming on Jan. 1 at 7 p.m. ET, according to EW. It will be online for 72 hours, and tickets are available for $5 at todaytix.com.
