Amidst the reporting this week that BYU is in position to join the Big 12 Conference, another big storyline within the football program came about Saturday when Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported that the Cougars will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish next season in Sin City.

Anderson reported that the contest will be played at Allegiant Stadium, where BYU will open its 2021 season on Saturday night against the Arizona Wildcats.

Vanquish The Foe’s Robby McCombs had reported in July that the BYU-Notre Dame game was in the works.

The contest would be the fulfillment of a series that was announced in 2010. The two sides played in 2012 and 2013 and still had one more game to play as part of the deal, but BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe has indicated over the years that the two school administrations were having a hard time coming to an agreement on when and where the game could be played.

Anderson reported that a date for the 2022 game is unclear, but both teams are open on Oct. 8 and Oct. 29.

It is unclear what, if anything, this means for the possibility that BYU enters the Big 12 as soon as next season.
